June 2009 - J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study Reveals Ford Brand Quality Improves In 2009 For The 8TH Straight Year

  • Ford brand's quality continues to improve faster than the overall industry
  • Ford brand's initial quality improved for the eighth consecutive year
  • Ford F-150, Mustang and Edge were quality leaders in their respective vehicle segments
  • F-250/F-350 Super-Duty manufacturing plant, Kentucky Truck in Louisville, was awarded a Bronze Plant Quality Award

DEARBORN, June 22, 2009 - Ford Motor Company recorded another strong improvement in J.D. Power and Associates' 2009 Initial Quality Study, putting the Ford brand among the best in the industry, placing the Ford brand among the study's top ten brands scoring highest in initial quality.

The Ford brand, which continues to outpace the overall industry's quality improvement, now has posted eight consecutive years of gains in the closely watched quality study based on consumer evaluations after the first three months of new-vehicle ownership. Overall, the Ford brand improved by 10 points over last year's study.

"It is gratifying to see our commitment to quality paying off," said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. "Ford has demonstrated consistent and continuous quality improvement and we won't be satisfied until Ford is the industry's global quality leader."

Some of Ford's most popular nameplates received top honors for their respective segment, including Ford F-150, Mustang and Edge.

J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study is based on responses from 80,930 new 2009 model-year vehicle owners after they have driven their new vehicles for three months. It measures problems per 100 vehicles and was based on November through February registrations.

"The Blue Oval is becoming synonymous with high quality with customers," Fowler said. "We're not only dramatically reducing defects, we are delivering the long-term durability and the superior craftsmanship that today's customers demand."

May 2009 - The 2010 Ford Mustang Scores 5-Star Safety Rating

Summary:

  • The 2010 Ford Mustang coupe has earned the U.S. government's top 5-star safety ratings, which includes 5-stars for driver and passenger in front and side crash tests, as well as for rollover performance
  • Ford has more U.S. government 5-star ratings than any other automotive brand
  • Mustang remains the number one selling sports car by a wide margin, with nearly a 40 percent share of the segment in April; May sales ahead of projections

The 2010 Ford Mustang coupe has earned the U.S. government's top 5-star crash-test rating, adding to widespread acclaim for the new car's unmistakable design and upgraded performance that builds on the formula that's made it America's favorite pony car for 45 years. Ford has more U.S. government 5-star-rated vehicles than any other brand and more Top Safety Pick ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other automaker.

The new Mustang uses high strength steel in its body structure and uses ultra high strength steel in the door intrusion beams for additional side impact protection.

The Mustang's considerable body stiffness contributes to the coupe and convertible's driving performance and has a parallel benefit in accident protection. While the coupe's body structure is approximately 31 percent stiffer than the previous Mustang platform, the convertible's is more than twice as stiff - creating a structure that helps protect the cabin from deformation and intrusion during an impact.

The front structure's crush zones are computer-designed to absorb energy in a controlled manner and help dissipate it before it can reach the passenger compartment. Ford engineers have run thousands of design iterations of the Mustang's front rails to arrive at an octagonal shape that helps spread crash forces evenly to help protect occupants.

State-of-the-art technology adds to the convenience and safety of the 2010 Mustang, from the availability of the latest version of Ford SYNC®, with new features 911 Assist? and Vehicle Health Report, to standard AdvanceTrac® Electronic Stability Control, which complements the all-speed traction control and standard anti-lock braking system (ABS).

Additional standard safety equipment includes Beltminder® and the Personal Safety System? - a system that includes dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, safety belt pretensioners and Beltminder.

Sales Leader
Mustang remains the number one selling sports car by a wide margin, with the new 2010 model driving showroom traffic. In April, Mustang had nearly a 40 percent share of the retail sports car segment.

Quotes:

"The Mustang offers top safety ratings that, like its design and performance, other sports cars cannot match."
                                                 - Sue Cischke,
                                                 Ford Group Vice President

"We've made many upgrades to the new Mustang that contributes not only to the car's safety, but also to its driving enjoyment thanks to a stiffer structure."

                                                 - Steve Kozak,
                                                 Ford Chief Engineer Safety Systems

"Interest in the fast, fun and affordable Mustang remains outstanding. The feedback from our dealers and customers is that we've taken the new 2010 Mustang to a new level of excellence."

                                                 - Steve Ling,
                                                 Ford Car Marketing Manager
